While enabling the obvious contribution of tape formula and tape compression, the record/repro electronics in that machine produced their own excitingly colorful effect which, if you ask me, was just as significant. M79 I/O transformers were big and fairly well behaved, but those beyerdynamic "peanut" transformers back to back surrounding the tape heads were undersized and overloaded easily, with a really "squeezed" and "tough" kind of response. This exploitation of transformer saturation for rock 'n roll enhancement is what inspired me to call my company "iron" audio ("eisen" when translated to German).

Another feature of the M79 multi-track was 3M Mincom's first non-discrete audio electronics. Indeed, M79 cards employed a selection of 741-derrived IC op amps. Although I loved the tone of that signal path I did not at first identify this aspect of its construction as special, nor beneficial. However, after a decade of discrete transistor exploration, I have come to the opinion that (given the right die and implementation) primitive monolithic amps can possess a sort of "attitude" which is uniquely desirable, and - I think - added another layer of grit to so many great 70s albums.

One such album that has always inspired me, sonically (texturally), is The Cars S/T, which peaked on the charts in 1979. I believe it was recorded by the great Roy Thomas Baker using 3M machines (presumably M79) and a massive Neve AIR console (which also made great use of IC amps coupled with so many more transformers). I am told that RTB would arrive at the studio a day early, play a reel of familiar drum tracks, and experiment with overdriving various permutations of console gain staging (i.e. "how does it sound if I crank this channel into group 1 and then back off at the remix assign?") until he got just the right kinds/amounts of distortion and "colour". Personally, I have found that this sort of deliberate clipping can facilitate a consistent and reasonable level, with a "rich" "finished" tone, to be printed on the first pass, without resorting to compressors/limiters later on. It was once, arguably, the method of pop music recording, whether intended or not, and is an approach that I keep in mind whenever I'm designing a new piece of gear: that clipping will inevitably happen, and had better sound musically-relevant when it does.

The TM79 Colour circuit was not copied from an 3M M79, nor lifted from the AIR console, nor derived from any specific piece of gear that I know of. Rather, it is a careful combination of distortion techniques that I've devised while contemplating why the aforementioned equipment sounds so good. TM79 is presented as an homage, obtaining similar results through concise means.

Actual TM79 realization can be broken down as follows:

Stage 1 of 3: The first half of an Intersil CA3240EZ dual mosfet-input IC op amp is configured as a differentiator, attempting to boost 6dB/octave all frequencies above ~4kHz until it runs out of gain-bandwidth.

Stage 2 of 3: A tiny (20mW) 1k:250Ω steel-core transformer from Triad Magnetics, driven by stage 1, steps down to a very heavy load of 68Ω , in parallel with two discrete mosfets configured as a passive clipper. A second identical transformer, in reverse, then steps back up to interface with stage 3.

Stage 3 of 3: The latter half of our Intersil CA3240EZ dual mosfet-input IC op amp is configured as an integrator, attempting to cut 6dB/octave all frequencies above ~17kHz until it fades into the noise floor.

For practical purposes, we can think of this 3-stage circuit as tape machine electronics: the pre-emphasis record EQ (HF boost) and de-emphasis repro EQ (HF cut), transformer coupled to their tape path in between. But of course there is no tape or tape heads here; we have a mosfet clipper in their place. And the surrounding EQ ensures that low frequency content isn't always the first to clip.

Other, less obvious shortcuts-to-distortion help add harmonic complexity and dynamic smoothing to the TM79 circuit. These include:

The omission of end-stop resistors, meaning the pre-emphasis EQ boosts until it clips, turning the high end into a mess, while the de-emphasis EQ becomes a quasi-reciprocal low-pass filter, removing some of this "hash".

Selecting an op amp which "sags" and "folds up nicely" when it tries to swing maximum amplitude, a condition which occurs prematurely in this application because the op amp is starved of output and feedback current drive by the directly coupled, low-Z, transformer load that it's ill-equipped to deal with.

Employing back-to-back transformers with the following conditions: a steel core for magnetic hysteresis, a small size to reach saturation more easily, and a "ridiculous" load so that saturation and dynamic compression at nominal levels are guaranteed, with the useful byproducts of subtle rolloff at HF/LF extremes with low-level midrange "thickening" in between.

All component values and types, including the various series of capacitor, were auditioned and selected by ear. As such it features low frequency boost and cut (shelving), a high frequency boost (peaking) and a high frequency cut (shelving). The stock frequencies are taken from the EQP-1A3 and are exceptional for general sweetening of individual signals and mixed program material. Unlike the Pultec model, however, the two LF bands (boost and cut, respectively) have separate frequency selections (instead of a single switch that selects both boost and cut), so you can cut at one frequency and boost at another, which cannot be done with original Pultecs or their clones.

What's the difference between the Modern and Vintage outputs?

The stock, Modern output design uses two IC (integrated circuit) opamp stages: one to make up level lost in the filter circuit, and the other as an inverting stage to provide a differential (balanced) output. This design provides an overall neutral character to the EQP5 that allows users to sweeten the audio spectrum while leaving the signal otherwise untouched.

The optional, Vintage output uses a discrete opamp (any DOA fitting the API 2520 footprint and pinout can be used) and a custom output transformer (wired 1:2) to give the EQP5 a more visceral, dynamic character that gives signals additional authority and helps them translate clearly in the mix while requiring less volume and processing to do so. The solid-state Pultec EQPs, the sound of which many engineers claim to be sweeter than that of the earlier tube units, use this same DOA/transformer output scheme.

Can I modify the frequencies?

Absolutely you can! Accordingly, each boost or cut function features its own knob. The full clockwise throw of these knobs is dedicated to either boosting or cutting its relative frequency. Because the full throw of these knobs is used only for boosting or cutting the resolution of the knobs is quite precise and makes the EQP5 perfect for refined processing of program material, such as 2-mix processing and mastering.

Where are the tubes?!

No tubes in the EQP5, sorry. The optional output shares topology with the later, solid state Pultecs, but we didn’t want the complexity of build (or the lethal voltages!) of quality vacuum tube circuits. Plus many people prefer the character of the solid state Pultecs over the earlier units with the differential vacuum tube stage.

Can I adjust the bandwidth on the HF boost band like I can on an original Pultec?

Yes, you can! The EQP5 provides a single-turn trimpot on the main PCB (printed circuit board) that allows adjustment for the HF+ bandwidth. Note that the setting of the Q trimpot directly affects the total available boost of the HF+ band. To understand why this is so, a brief explanation is warranted:

The EQP5’s filter is entirely passive and produces an insertion loss across the entire frequency spectrum when controls are set flat. When one implements a boost, the filter is actually affecting a negative or reverse cut (which reduces the amount of cut across the relevant frequency range, allowing more of those frequencies through–a perceived ‘boost’). Being passive, the total amount of energy affected by the HF+ filter is fixed. When all of this energy is focused on a narrower set of frequencies via a narrow Q setting, the resulting total boost range is greater than when that energy is spread out among a wider range of frequencies (as it is with a broader Q setting). As a result the same position of the front panel’s HF+ knob will result in higher or lower absolute boost, depending on the setting of the Q trimpot.

Given that wider Q settings yield more natural sounding results (for a broader range of applications), we recommend setting the trimpot somewhere between 12 and 2 o’clock. But feel free, of course, to play with this control to see what settings work best for your applications. The PCB provides test points for measurement of this trimpot, so settings can be logged for channel matching and/or later recall.

Why not put the bandwidth control on the front panel?

Front panel real estate on a 500-series module is limited, so there is often much weeping and gnashing of teeth when determining what controls will make it onto the front of the unit. Being able to provide all the front panel controls of the EQP5 plus a bandwidth knob would have made the build more complex and considerably more expensive. Besides, not all Pultec models included this control. For example, the HF+ band of Pultec’s EQH-2 (a close cousin to the EQPs) had a fixed Q with no user adjustment available. In our experience, of all the controls on an EQP-style program EQ the bandwidth seems to get the least use, so we decided to move it to the PCB, so users can still make adjustments as desired.

The PCB provides test points for measurement of the Q trimpot, so settings can be logged for channel matching and/or later recall.

30Hz? The 30Hz position is one of the original four LF choices on the Pultec EQPs, and one of our favorites to boot (hence its inclusion on the EQP5)! One could certainly argue that 30Hz isn’t the most musically useful frequency for an EQ, but this isn’t your typical EQ. The slope of these LF filters are so broad that they affect frequencies above 1kHz (boost) and up past 3kHz (cut), making these filters extremely musical (and broadly applicable) regardless of their labels. Helpful? Let me explain.

The EQP5’s filter design and available frequencies are taken directly from Pultec’s classic EQP-1A3. As such it shares the same ability to sweeten the frequency response of all kinds of signals as the classic Pultec. Where the EQP5 differs, sonically, is in the signal path.

The stock signal path of the EQP5 is an all-IC, transformerless design. As such it delivers a purer signal which is more faithful to the signal being processed compared to the more colored signal path of vintage units. If you want more vintage color then opting for the discrete opamp/transformer-balanced output is the way to go with your EQP5. This arrangement, used in the later, solid-state Pultecs, gives your signals a lively, dynamic, more opulent characteristic that is as much felt as it is heard. And when transistors are pushed to their limits, they begin to distort in beautiful ways. The JFT Colour is designed by this philosophy: choose great-sounding transistors and then make them work very hard.

The JFT employs two class-A saturation stages to create a complex, layered character. In the first stage, a NOS JFET generates asymmetrical distortion, clipping the bottom of the waveform but not the top. This type of saturation, which is associated with triode tubes, thickens and warms up the signal while maintaining its integrity. In the second stage, five transistors form a primitive discrete opamp which operates just on the verge of instability. The punchy, present sound of those classic 70's consoles derives from the unique character of the DOA and transformer and the complex ways they interact with each other. Countless plugins have tried to imitate this sound, but why imitate when you can have the real thing?

The CTX combines the RED-25 DOA with a Cinemag transformer and then cranks the gain to pack the sound of a channel strip into a single Colour. At moderate operating levels, the module's effect is vanishingly subtle, but makes everything sound more "finished" when stacked over numerous tracks in a mix. As levels increase the transistors of the DOA and core of the transformer saturate, thickening the signal with low-frequency harmonics and natural compression.

MKII Improvements

In 2019 to celebrate the fifth anniversary of the Colour Format, we redesigned the first three Colours, the 15IPS, CTX, and JFT, to use only discrete, class-A transistor circuitry.
