Work in Progress: The Ultimate Audio Transformer List December 9, 2011 17:37 12 Comments
How awesome would it be to have a list of every transformer you'd ever want to use in a DIY project? Let's do it! Please leave your contributions in the comments section. Thank you to Justin Boland for getting us started.
*Indicates that this was the original transformer used for this purpose.

I also like the Hammond 133 600 to 600 ohm isolator transformer. Very rare. I still have a case of them. I’m also a big fan of the Hammond 840 series. Very well shielded for my tube designs. Cheers

I was fortunate in that I had a lot of old trnosfarmers to experiment with WITHOUT having data on them so I had to learn to figure out what they were by testing. That was invaluable experience. Generally, with a sine wave generator and a DMM you can figure out 99% of trnosfarmers as to intended function and the necessary specs. Power throughput is generally a matter of weight, then you test for temperature rise to see if it’s what you need in terms of capacity. But it’s a lot of fun to read the manuals too-as long as you understand they were trying to sell trnosfarmers! Ed Romney in his Fixing Up Nice Old Radios has some very useful catalog excerpts and comments. He is dead and I believe his widow is as well, now. I hope someone reprints his books.

Marinair didn’t make ZUTT; ZUTT made ZUTT. It was some local junk purchased from the back of a surplus parts truck, which Trident chose because they were unable to buy Marinairs in the first place. Either XUTT 782A or ZUTT 012A in A Range, B Range, and Fleximix as Mic In 1:5.63 1.2k:38k The Line In was XUTL 783A 1:1 15k:15k, if I recall correctly.

Good work. A few more random additions for your list, taken from notes I had to hand when I saw your post. Most should be accurate, but I’ve added questions where I can’t verify it right now.
You really should write to Sowter, Carnhill, Lundahl etc, as they’ll have a pretty extensive list of this stuff — they’re making thigns to the same spec as all these out of production xformers after all! Anyway…

Altran C4000, Line Out, Slate Pro Dragon compressor
Jensen JT-11P-1TB, Line In, used in Vertigo VCS-2
Manley 9811, Line Out, Massive Passive plus optional on Mini Massive
Lundahl LL1538, Mic In, 1:5 turns ratio, used in Focsurite ISA preamps, GP Electronics PML200E, and in Trident 80B (I was given to understand that the original Trident used a Bellclair model with the same turns ratio, though can’t verify this?), among others.
Lundahl LL1588, Line Out, GP Electronics PML200E
Lundahl LL5402, Line Out, MC AudioLab TP1tp
Lundahl LL1540, Line In, IGS Audio Tubecore ME
Lundahl 1527, Mic in, Optional addition to Raindirk RM4 channel strip
Lundahl Amporphous Core, Line, Out, Knif Soma EQ (fascinating read about why they picked these ones: http://www.knifaudio.com/pdf/Quality%2520factors%2520in%2520pro%2520audio%2520equipment.pdf)
Sowter 9745, Line Out, IGS Tubecore ME
Sowter 8403A, Line Out, Optional addition to the Buzz Audio MA2.2 & SSA1.1
Sowter 1196 (custom wound), Mic In, Ingram Engineering MPA685 (uses Jensen outs but not sure of the model)
UTC A-10 – am I right in thinking this is what the original LA2 used for input?
And UTC A-24 for output?
I also have a few chunky vintage 1:1 audio transformers marked ‘Swavesy’, which is a village near where I live, a couple of miles down the road from St Ives. Anyone know anything about these? I’m struggling to find reliable historical info online…

If you think the Zutts mic input xfrmrs are junk, sell me what ya got! Great sounding xfrmr, to me ears at least, a big part of the Trident A range sound. 8-)

Monacor is cheap and is widely available here in europe.
The Neutrik audio transformers should also be mentioned, i think:
NTE1 (1:1)
NTE4 (1:4)
NTE10 (1:10)
Types with MuMetal Shield:
NTM4 (1:4)
NTL1 (1:1)
